They are Who We Thought They Were: Va. GOP Candidate Robert F. McDonnell

Standard

Except the Washington Post didn’t let him off the hook. GOP gubernatorial nominee Robert F. McDonnell in Virginia thinks moms who work ruin families. Really. He does.

At age 34, two years before his first election and two decades before he would run for governor of Virginia, Robert F. McDonnell submitted a master’s thesis to the evangelical school he was attending in Virginia Beach in which he described working women and feminists as “detrimental” to the family. He said government policy should favor married couples over “cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators.” He described as “illogical” a 1972 Supreme Court decision legalizing the use of contraception by unmarried couples.

That was Levar Burton’s catch phrase to close Reading Rainbow every episode. A simple invitation to kids to explore through reading. And such an important invitation it was to me. I would beg my parents to take me to the Dauphin County East Shore Area Library in Colonial Park so I could try and find the books he talked about on that show.

I don’t know if its just me getting old and lamenting the “good old days”, but its unfortunate that Reading Rainbow is being axed.

The show’s run is ending, Grant explains, because no one — not the station, not PBS, not the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — will put up the several hundred thousand dollars needed to renew the show’s broadcast rights.

Grant says the funding crunch is partially to blame, but the decision to end Reading Rainbow can also be traced to a shift in the philosophy of educational television programming. The change started with the Department of Education under the Bush administration, he explains, which wanted to see a much heavier focus on the basic tools of reading — like phonics and spelling.

Why was Hillary Clinton’s campaign so fraught with back stabbing, disorganization? Well, Burson-Marsteller CEO Mark Penn was chief strategist and pollster, and he was probably worried about his next checks more than he was about President Hillary Clinton becoming reality. Viva Las Vegas: Existing Home Short Sales

In the shadow of the spectacle of Casino-Resorts and the construction site of MGM’s CityCenter mega-development, is the over developed, foreclosure crazy residential market of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Vick will play Thursday with the Eagles starters.

Pocket Qb. Wildcat Qb.

Donovan McNabb will play the first three quarters and Kevin Kolb will play the 4th. […] He also said he had no reservations about showing Vick in the Wildcat formation. I gotta say, Big Red looked downright giddy as he announced this. Should be interesting… via Vick to play with starters Thursday night – Bleeding Green Nation.

The local NAACP chapter has decided that making a reactionary spectacle outside the stadium prior to Vick’s return is the best way to support black quarterbacks:

J. Whyatt Mondesire, president of the NAACP’s Philadelphia chapter, said Wednesday that his group and others planned to rally outside Lincoln Financial Field in support of Vick.

“Just some folk walking around with some signs saying, ‘Leave him alone, Michael Vick should be allowed to play football,’ nothing elaborate. We heard some PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) people might come and try to make life uncomfortable, and we don’t want them to be out there alone.”

Obama cozy with the CEO of UBS…too cozy?

[Obama] spent five hours golfing with Robert Wolf, president of UBS Investment Bank and chairman and CEO of UBS Group Americas. Wolf, an early financial backer of Obama’s presidential campaign, raised $250,000 for him back in 2006, and in February was appointed by the president to the White House’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board. Economic recovery for whom?

Interestingly, Wolf’s appointment came in the same month that UBS agreed to pay the U.S. $780 million to settle civil and criminal charges related to helping people in the U.S. avoid taxes. Not to worry. UBS, an ailing bank with a pre-existing condition, had great insurance coverage. It was actually receiving $2.5 billion in a backdoor bailout from bailed-out insurance giant AIG.

Japan PM says: poor people…marriage ain’t for you

Isn’t splitting cost a benefit to getting married? or are there a lack of subsidies and/or tax incentives in Japan for married couples?

Mr Aso was asked whether poverty was making people marry later, contributing to Japan’s low birth rate.

His response was: ”Young people had better not get married with little money.”

He added it was difficult for him to see how someone without pay could be seen as an object of respect.

2004 CIA Torture Report Fallout: Power Shuffle

Standard

Administration reactions to the Office Of The Inspector General’s report on CIA Counterterrorism Detention and Interrogation Activities:

[The Obama Administration] wrested control of future interrogations of suspected senior al-Qaeda members away from the CIA and handed it to an interagency group that will be housed at the FBI — whose agents had not only objected to the CIA’s techniques but also refused to stay in the rooms where they were practiced.

[…]

Obama and his aides, in contrast, have concluded that the benefits of the harsh interrogation program were unproven or slight, and that the costs to America’s standing in the world exceed any potential gains from allowing it to persist.

via Analysis: Bush, Obama Administrations Drew Different Lessons From CIA Report.

Accoording to the report FBI agents refused to partake in torture. It is fairly safe to conclude that the CIA agents tortured because they felt they were covered by permission slips from Jay Bybee and John Yoo and they were “just following orders”. CIA interrogators were effectively ordered to operate as if they were above the law.

The new interagency interrogation team, overseen by the National Security Council and housed at the FBI, seems to be organized to empower the professionals who honored the rule of law and signal Obama’s distrust of the current CIA’s ability to do the same.

Bloomberg vs Fed: Fed must Comply with FOIA Inquiry

Standard

Lawmakers, investor and we, the taxpayers, will get to know the term of our loans to banks. Zero Hedge summarizes the news:

This is in relation to a lawsuit filed by Bloomberg LP against the Federal Reserve on November 7, 2008, in Southern District of New York (08-09595), in which Bloomberg sought material loan and collateral data in relation to emergency loans released by the Fed, and which were previously claimed to be non-FOIAble.

This is a large blow against the Fed and specifically against organizations using FOIA loopholes from providing critical information, particularly in cases involving trillions of taxpayer dollars bailing out huge, systematically and politically embedded financial organizations (which lately is pretty much all of them).

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. (AP) — Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, widely credited with taking aggressive action to avert an economic catastrophe after the financial meltdown last fall, will be nominated by President Barack Obama for a second term, The Associated Press learned Monday night.

Bernanke masterminded what is now seen as a successful strategy to lift the economy out of recession, unlock credit and stabilize financial markets in part by using unconventional and unprecedented lending programs.

Shanté’s claim to be a “doctor” also fails to check out. She’s not a medical doctor, and she admits (and Cornell confirms) that she lacks a Ph.D. And a search of the New York Office of the Professions licensing database fails to reveal licenses to practice psychology or in any related field for either “Lolita Gooden” or “Roxanne Shanté.”

More rookie athletes should try and work in contract clauses like Roxanne Shante’s Rap as student aid:

After two albums, Shante said, she was disillusioned by the sleazy music industry and swindled by her record company. The teen mother, living in the Queensbridge Houses, recalled how her life was shattered. “Everybody was cheating with the contracts, stealing and telling lies,” she said. “And to find out that I was just a commodity was heartbreaking.” But Shante, then 19, remembered a clause in her Warner Music recording contract: The company would fund her education for life. She eventually cashed in, earning a Ph.D. in psychology from Cornell to the tune of $217,000 – all covered by the label. But getting Warner Music to cough up the dough was a battle. via Rapper behind ‘Roxanne’s Revenge’ gets Warner Music to pay for Ph.D.

Who is this Guy? Baucus: “I Want a Public Option”

Standard

(Belgrade Mont.) Montana

Huh?

U.S. Senator Max Baucus has finally broken his silence regarding his personal position on including a public option in health care reform legislation. Last Monday night (8/17), in an unprecedented conference call to Montana Democratic central committee chairs, the powerful leader of the Senate Finance Committee told his strongest supporters that he supported a public option.

While discussing the obstacles to getting a public option through the Senate, he assured his forty listeners, “I want a public option too!”

The conference call was groundbreaking in that none of the recipients could ever remember this kind of call ever happening before. The teleconference was set up seemingly in reaction to rising discontent among the local Democratic leaders with the Senator’s failure to take a clear position on the issue.

The discussion, which became contentious and rancorous at times, also touched upon the wisdom of creating insurance cooperatives as an alternative to a public option. When several of the county chairs objected, commenting that they did not trust the health insurance companies to police themselves and limit their outrageous corporate profits, Baucus commented, “Neither do I.”

via The Seminal » Baucus: “I Want a Public Option”.

If any of this is true, then why negotiate with a Blue Dog/GOP delegation that says they will never sign a bill with any “public option”?
